The pivotal scavenger, the Striped Hyena (Hyaena hyaena), faces a real threat of extinction in the future if we don’t act decisively now. Faced with declining populations, illegal trade, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict, this vital species needs our collective action.
For a long time, the Striped Hyena was thought to be lost in Tajikistan. However, thanks to the dedicated efforts of our conservationists, this incredible species has been rediscovered in our country, a testament to its resilience and our commitment!
As the Committee for Environmental Protection of Tajikistan under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, we are committed to protecting vulnerable species. We have therefore formally submitted a proposal to uplist the Striped Hyena from CITES Appendix III to Appendix I. This crucial step will ensure stronger global enforcement, secure vital funding, and provide the robust protection necessary to prevent its future extinction.
Why Appendix I? While currently «Near Threatened» on IUCN, new data and range-state insights confirm its numbers are rapidly declining, meeting CITES’ «threatened» criteria for future risk. Appendix I will ban commercial trade, close loopholes, and finally give this misunderstood species the international recognition and protection it desperately needs. Appendix III, currently in place, is insufficient and offers limited, country-specific safeguards.
